Welcome to IGTV, Instagram’s brand new vertical video platform! For a while, we’ve heard rumblings of a new 60-minute upload limit, and it turns out there was some truth to it!
IGTV seems to be Instagram’s attempt to steal eyes away from YouTube as video consumption accounts for 78% of all mobile data traffic. IGTV channels can be created by anyone, where they can share their videos with their followers in a similar manner to YouTube.
Creators can currently upload videos of up to 10 minutes and 60 minutes long for larger accounts. However, Instagram have announced that eventually there will be no limit.
IGTV has already been rolled out for all iOS and Android device users! You can use it within the native Instagram app or with a standalone app for a more immersive experience.
Much like Youtube, IGTV will curate content for you based upon your history, and you will also be able to peruse a “popular” section too.
IGTV currently is an ad-less experience, however, we’re sure that adverts are inevitable as Instagram CEO Kevin Systrom said that “There will be a way for creators to make a living.”
Now, we think this is rather an important one. Think about any other video player you know: Netflix, YouTube, Amazon Prime, Facebook etc. All of these are built for landscape videos. IGTV’s choice is certainly innovative and quite the departure from anything we’ve seen before. However, for creators, this now means shooting in landscape and portrait or make sure you can crop either way.
